About the building

St. Georg, located to the east of the Außenalster, was once a suburb of Hamburg that developed around a hospital founded in 1200. Everyone who was not tolerated within the city walls, from pig breeders to leprosy sufferers, was banished here. Following the lifting of the gate closure in 1860/61, however, the area developed into a prosperous middle-class district whose Wilhelminian-era buildings and factory halls are much sought after today. It seems all the more contradictory, then, that such a striking white building, one without equal, now stands here at such an important gateway to Hamburg's city centre.

Plenty of greenery in front of the door creates the impression of a pole position on the Alster, and the view cannot be built over.

Speaking of views: the interior is surprising too. Curves and light-coloured plaster define the lobby and stairwell, with the exterior and interior of the ADA one almost merging into one another. Everything feels very airy and bright, because even where rooms are enclosed (separated by glass walls), views from the corridor are retained. The floor-to-ceiling windows let plenty of light into the interior and offer panoramic views of the Alster and the city skyline.
