About the building

The Tabakfabrik is located in a rear courtyard setting to the west of the Hoheluftchaussee, and fortunately this section of the Hoheluftchaussee will not fall victim to general urban development, owing to its listed status. Built around 1900 and used as a commercial site since the mid-1980s, the building has survived almost unchanged to this day. This distinctive office location is now home to numerous creative people from the worlds of advertising, media and fashion, as well as to a bilingual kindergarten. Probably the most striking feature of the historic building complex is the chimney, encased in a water tank and fitted with an escape staircase, which was only added in 1909. Alongside the attractive main building with its decorative grilles, turrets, crenellations and brick elements set against white render, a machine wing, the office building and a further ancillary building also came through the world wars unscathed.
